Field Trip to the Hamburger Farm!!

Today we had a wonderful opportunity of chaperoning Isaiah's field trip to the Hamburger Farm in Wheatland. This is the same farm we went to for the Pumpkins last Oct. When they are on their off season for pumpkins, they turn it into a Hamburger Farm with different activities. It was a lot of fun and very informative. First we started out at the petting zoo, then rode the train to the big garden. At the garden, our guide showed the kids wheat and they were able to grind it into flour. (brought back memories of my mom turning on her wheat grinder to make whole weat waffles growing up) Then we continued to see the tomotoes, onions, lettuce, cucumbers(pickles), and then finally the cow. We pretty much saw all the indgredients to a cheeseburger. The cow was huge.... she was 7 months pregnant! I felt like I could relate to her! hahaha... After we talked about the cows, we went to dig up potatoes. The kids were so proud of digging up their own potatoes. Then they put one through a french fry cutter and the kids were amazed! It was funny! Then we were able to go see some beehives and look for the queen bee. Isaiah found it! After that we jumped back on the train and they provided a cheeseburger lunch for us. It was delicious. The kids were able to play after that on the barn slides and we all had a blast.... even though it was 101 degrees outside!! It was a great experience though for the kids and they learned so much. Hearing the adults comments also were interesting because half of them didn't know about the gardens, bee's and animals. I really felt lucky to have grown up with a very rich agricultural background. With my Grandpa Meyer being a beekeeper and my Grandpa King being a dairy farmer, I guess I never realized how many experiences I've had around ag. Also, the many gardens we've had in our backyard growing up. A lot of people in the Sacramento area and many other cities are never exposed to those things. I'm thankful that I have been and I can't wait for the opportunity that we'll have when we have a house someday to grow a garden. But anyway, so here are some pics from our day. I didn't get to take too many because I had 5 water bottles in my hands and trying to keep track of my group of kids. But I hope you all enjoy them......

Chooooo Choooo.... here we are on the train....

We got to grind out own wheat into flour!!

Isaiah was chosen from the class to come pull up an onion.... he did a great job!

Milking of the cows! They had 2 fake wood cows with water that could be squeezed out of the udders. It was awesome! The kids love "milking" the cow. Here are some pics of it......
